A Product Designer's Hilarious "Unhinged" UI Design Features –

September 20, 2023

For his day job, product designer Soren Iverson handles the Cash app’s UI. On the side, the L.A.-based designer, who has a wicked sense of humor, design concepts for “unhinged” UI features that no one asked for. With the perceptive eye of a stand-up comic, Iverson observes how people interact with commonly-used apps, then marshals his keen grasp of both human nature and business reality to present “Wouldn’t it be funny if…” design proposals like the following:

Iverson, who cranks these out regularly, has also put together a book, “Can You Imagine?” containing 100 of his favorite design ideas. It can be pre-ordered here ($40).
Lastly, for those of you working as, or aspiring to be, UI designers: Iverson has a YouTube channel where he shares the UI design knowledge gained in his decade of experience. He’s got over 120 instructional videos showing you “how to use design tools and break down more high-level concepts like presentation and visual design,” all for free. Check it out here.

I’m just here to express my distinct displeasure that Core77 of all digital publications would use “Product Designer” to refer to a professional that does not, in fact, contribute to making physical goods
What says a physical object constitutes a product? A UI is or can be part of a product. Can’t you buy apps in the app store?
I definitely concede to your point, something digital can absolutely be a product. I just find the title of “product designer” in the digital realm to be needlessly derivative and opaque. It could simply be specified as “digital product design” and my field would no longer be drowning in unrelated job postings.
I agree that the titles can be confusing. I typically use just “Industrial Designer” for better or worse. I work on designing physical objects, machinery, and UI daily.
Check his banner on Youtube.
Sorry, but why do you think only physical products are considered products? Anything that is ‘produced’ is product.  Software is a product. Music is a product, art is a product, toasters are a product.  It’s odd to have “distinct displeasure” over the use of a word you don’t understand.
As a Principal Product Designer, I disagree.
Oops, meant that for Matt.
*UX Designer

*Digital Product Designer
*UI Designer
*Software Designer
End the confusion between the digital space and the physical space.
